Eastern Europe: Prague, Czech Republic

The finale of my trip was Prague, the magical city in the heart of the Czech Republic! For a girl who loves history as much as I do, this was a seriously amazing place, complete with remnants of city walls and gate towers dating back to the 13th century!

The road to Prague from Vienna was lined with vineyard after vineyard, all in bloom…

We began our visit with Prague Castle, which of course included the famous changing of the Guard!

Prague is a tremendously beautiful city and simply walking around and taking in the architecture and people is an experience in itself!

You know I never miss an opportunity for great coffee!

One of the optional excursions that Go Ahead offers on this trip is a private tour and concert of the incredible Chateau Synchrov!

After our intimate tour of the house, we were treated to a private concert by the AMAZING Trio 75 whose performance was truly a one of a kind experience. They were incredible.

Like in Budapest, I chose to get up before the sun one morning and check out Prague in the early hours! This time I had the wonderful company of a fellow traveler and we had a ball exploring the city in its quiet awakening!
The sun was hidden behind overcast skies this time, but we still reveled in having the Charles Bridge virtually to ourselves!

The Old Town Square was another place that was just insane to experience without the throngs of people who flock to see the famous astronomical clock on the Old Town Hall

Like much of the rest of Eastern Europe, there are signs of the struggle against communism tucked in among the sites. At Wenceslas Square, there are small monuments to protesters who gave their lives, and I was again moved by how active the monuments are…flowers and stones mark how the Czechs of Prague haven’t forgotten their history.

During the day, the Charles Bridge fills with artists and musicians…it’s a bustle that you don’t want to miss!

Another optional excursion that Go Ahead offers is a tour of Prague’s Jewish Quarter, Josefov. It was absolutely fantastic! Several of the old synagogues have been turned into amazing museums, including an extremely powerful holocaust memorial. {I, understandably, wasn’t permitted to photograph inside any of the synagogues}

The Old Jewish Cemetery was just incredible.
A group of us made it over to check out the famous Lennon Wall, a constantly evolving symbol of freedom of expression and love that has stood for decades!

We made our way to Petrin Hill, complete with its famous tower and funicular! We happened to be there for the May Day festival and the mood of the park was just ridiculously fun!

These rolled pastries, called trdelniks, are cooked over open coals and then dusted with cinnamon and sugar…SO scrumptious!!

St. Vitus Cathedral is another don’t miss site!

Like in Budapest and Vienna, our tour director Paul used his expertise to facilitate yet another food and dancing experience that was just a blast! Food and traditional Czech music and dance made for an entertaining evening!

That wraps up my incredible Eastern Europe experience!! I’m SO grateful to have been given this assignment by the oh-so-awesome Go Ahead Tours!! Happy Monday!!

Thank you for calling last night. Cindy, I always love to hear what is going on with you and Justin. I also love the beautiful photographs. You capture so much life and history and culture in your work. You make it look more like play! Try not to kill yourself this wedding season, Sweetie! You are always in my thoughts. Love, Dad

Eastern Europe: Bratislava, Slovakia

Just a few hours from Vienna, Bratislava is the capital city of Slovakia. We were able to spend a day wandering the cobbled streets of this small and ancient city! I really loved Bratislava! I found the historic Old Town surprisingly manageable and intimate despite being a capital city and felt like I was able to get a feel for the city even in such a short time!

From Bratislava Castle, it is possible to see Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary!

The Jesuit Church in the city’s Old Town

Bratislava’s Old Town features a main central square, surrounded by shops and cafes and all sorts of quirky art that I couldn’t get enough of!

Tucked in around the Old Town are several bronze statues, possibly the most famous of which is Cumil!

Napoleon’s statue has bare feet and his hat pulled over his eyes…not exactly complimentary!
Bratislava’s pink Primate’s Palace is host to a set of gorgeous tapestries depicting the tale of Hero and Leander woven in the 1630s! {It does not allow photography inside}

This statue is aptly named “Paparazzi”

Another traveler and I made our way to the top of St Michael’s Tower (which houses a fascinating museum!) and soaked in the views of Bratislava!

Our group wrapped up our day at the absolutely fabulous Lemontree Restaurant…scrumptious food + amazing views? Yes, please.

I’ll have Prague for you tomorrow! Happy Friday!!

Eastern Europe: Vienna, Austria

Vienna, with it’s sprawling palaces and famous opera house, is a city of art and music. Home to everything from Klimt’s The Kiss to the eclectic architecture of the Hundertwasserhaus, there was certainly no shortage of places to see or things to do! I felt like I could happily have spent weeks in Vienna exploring the numerous museums and palaces as well as taking in sites like the famous Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Lipizzaner Stallions at the Spanish Riding School. But alas, this was called the “Highlights of Eastern Europe” tour for a reason and I absolutely loved everything I did manage to squeeze in!

The stunning Belvedere Palace is home to the Belvedere Museum, current home to Klimt’s work among others!

One of the optional excursions on the tour included a ride on Vienna’s famous ferris wheel, the Weiner Riesenrad at Prater amusement park, followed by dinner at a traditional Heurigan wine tavern…it was ridiculously fun!!

There was music and dancing and delicious food like sausage, sauerkraut, and schnitzel, and of course, the wine that these taverns are so famous for!

Our group was joined by Polish tourists whose ringleader finished the evening by leading us all in song!!

No evening in Vienna is complete without Viennese coffee and cake!

The surreal architecture of the Hundertwasserhaus is full of easily missed details and hidden treasures…I felt a bit like I’d stepped into a Dr. Seuss book for a moment and adore the vibrant colors and wonky shapes!

Have I mentioned how ridiculously fun our group was?!?!?
Schonbrunn Palace was the summer residence of the Hapsburgs. While I was prohibited from photographing inside, I assure you that it’s outside splendor was matched indoors!
I couldn’t get enough of the horses!

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is not only a magnificent example of the Romanesque and Gothic style, but it’s stained glass creates an absolutely breathtaking cacophony of color inside!!

The view from the tower is insane!

Our tour director, Paul, arranged for us to see an incredible performance featuring the music of Mozart and Schubert, accompanied by the talents of a pair of opera singers and a pair of ballet dancers!

I definitely left Vienna with plans to return! So much art and history and music and food…it is truly an amazing city!!

It’s on to Bratislava, Slovakia next!!
