I’ve had several clients recently ask me for some ideas about how to best keep and display their images. It’s been just the kick in the butt I needed to motivate me to write a few posts about exactly that!! I think that one of the biggest drawbacks to digital photography (maybe the only drawback?) is how easy it is to take a million photos and then just let them live on your computer until you forget that you even have them! I see this in my own life with my personal photos! I recently ran across about 300 photos I took when Justin and I went to visit my Dad in Seattle last year…photos of us with my Dad, sightseeing in downtown Seattle, hiking in Mt. Rainier National Park…all sitting untouched on a hard drive! And I wish I could say that was a one-time thing! While it seems less likely that people would do that with images from important events like their wedding, life has a way on creeping up on our best intentions and there those images sit while we take care of higher priorities on our to-do lists (you know, like grocery shopping!!)!
I want my clients to have their digital files…it was your wedding after all! But I also really want you to enjoy them!! And I think that begins with having hard copies in some form! While I am tempted to launch into the million and one reasons I think albums are priceless, I want to save that for another post and begin at the beginning….your engagement photos!!
I include an engagement session with every wedding for several really important reasons (again, another post!). While everyone is thrilled to have some great images of themselves as a couple, the question of what to do with them tends to come up first following that session. Which is where a guestbook comes in!!
Traditionally, guestbooks were little bound books filled with lined pages where your wedding guests could scribble their names and you would be left with a mostly blank notebook with a list of names that you would then put on a bookshelf never to open again! Nowadays, couples are getting SO creative and I’ve seen everything from thumbprint trees to photo mats to, most recently, an electric guitar!! I love love LOVE that couples are seeking to not only engage their guests a little more (no stiff signatures here!), but also looking for ways to create a “guestbook” that they will look at and enjoy and that will help them remember the incredible love and support that poured out from their family and friends on their wedding day!
So why not combine a treasury of your favorite engagement images with the messages of love from your guests? There are SO many options for creating your perfect guestbook and it guarantees that neither your engagement photos nor your guests’ well wishes will end up collecting dust on the bookshelf!
